Job Hopper 6 Quick Fixes to Cover Resume Gaps

Job Hopper 6 Quick Fixes to Cover Resume Gaps Sometimes a resume will look like the person has had more jobs than hot meals. This is a sure fire way to make any potential employer run for the hills. Big gaping gaps on a resume will bring attention to you for all the wrong reasons. Job hopping indicates a lack of stability in your career. The worry is that you get fired too often, you easily get bored or you just can’t seem to pick the right job for you. You can be regarded as you being a quitter and not committing to any career. As hiring and firing is both time consuming and expensive, the last thing anybody wants is to have to redo it all in 3 months time. Employers are snowed under with applications nowadays and looking for reasons to rule people out, just to get through their stack of resumes for the day. This is why you need to work on your job hopping profile and try to turn the attention away from your gaps and on to you as a person. Turning these gaps into a positive is a hotly debated subject in the resume writing world. The good news is that more and more people will have gaps in their profiles as we are in the midst of a recession and we can almost expect to be made redundant at least once. Here are some hot tips on how you can put a positive spin on your job hopping resume: 1) Turn attention away from your employment dates: Avoid putting employment dates in prominent places, making them bold, including them in the headings or any other way that will bring the reader’s eye to it. Try putting the dates at the end of the description of the job. You can also skip months and simply put years on there. Some recruiters and HR people will insist on the exact dates, some won’t. You can always try using years only at first. 2) Put all short term assignments together in one group: Lump any short term, interim, contract, freelance work together in one. You can use a collective header such as “Consulting Work” in which you list all your short term assignments until today. The aim of your resume is to demonstrate your skills and experience for a particular company and job. It’s not a document listing all tiny events of your life. 3) Omit anything irrelevant on your resume: Omit any jobs that aren’t relevant to this job search and the company you are applying for. There is no rule saying you have to include all jobs you ever did on your resume. You decide what goes on there, it’s not an autobiography. 4) Be open about why you left your previous employment: Be prepared for questions about why your previous employments ended. One acceptable reason for job hopping could be that you were exploring different jobs to see what you were meant to do. Based on that experience, you now know that the job your applying for is perfect. In case you left a job due to legitimate reasons such as cut backs, mergers or outsourcing, make certain you say this in the resume already. Being made redundant is something out of your control and happens all too often in this economy. 5) Use online networking and personal branding: Having a strong personal brand and using this to network across the many online platforms that are available out there will also help to bring the focus on you as a person instead of your resume document. If you make a good first impression while networking, chances are the company will scrutinise your resume less and you will get a personal interview. Update your online profiles on social media, some employers will even spend more time checking you out online than reading your resume. 6) Write a great cover letter: Make sure you write a fantastic cover letter that will stand out (to outweigh the resume). The cover letter must indicate your knowledge of the company you are applying for as well as how you are going to add value to your prospective new company. Conclusion: Your aim here is really to bring the focus away from you being a risk to hire. By demonstrating your achievements and experience as opposed to what is missing, you could get away with your job hopping history and land a new job. What are your best tips for job hoppers? Digital skills and how university boosts yours University of Manchester Careers Blog

Digital skills and how university boosts yours University of Manchester Careers Blog Written by Amanda Conway, Careers Consultant at The Careers Service It won’t cost you money, and you don’t need to be particularly savvy to get started, so investing in your digital know-how could be time well spent, particularly given employers’ increasing focus on employees’ digital capabilities. Whether you want to overhaul your digital know-how or just tinker at the edges, here are 5 of my favourite ways to get the transformation underway and give your skills the polish they have been looking for. Start on campus…. The financial perks of being a student go way beyond free Domino’s pizza and student discounts. IT training and support are part of the package. Why not start with My Learning Essentials, run by the University’s library, for a series of free online workshops and training materials just for Manchester students, including ones for using search engines, databases and social media tools? You could also try Digilab something thathas been developed by the University library where you can test out new technology or attend workshops and lightening talks. There are also Code Clubs on Thursday afternoons, if you want to learn to code or get help from other coders. Workshops includeRaspberryPi, Creative Coding, and 3D Printing. Too busy with study? Why not get academic credit for your digital efforts through University College? With module options available for both Semesters 1 and 2, take a look at Digital Society, Artificial Intelligence, or their new module Trust and Security in a Digital World. Alternatively, dip into the marvellous “1 minute CPD” videos helping you to improve your digital skills one minute at a time. Although written for University staff, many of the tips and ideas are great for students to use too. Will employers help out? Absolutely! From free training sites, to a tour of their offices and work experience, a growing number of employers are looking to bust the myths about what working in the digital sector is all about and help students to make the most of what is on offer. Maybe make a start with Accenture’s online training site â€" Future Learn for a range of free courses. Google’s Digital Garage is also home to free online training, coaches and help to solve your IT knowledge gaps. Employers also offer competitions and challenges to encourage students to explore the options open to them. Some popular ones are listed here with many of them having led to internships or graduate job offers for current and former Manchester students: www.careers.manchester.ac.uk/findjobs/competitions/ Some employers also offer insight weeks in the spring to give you a real flavour of what is possible working for them and what the work involves. You don’t need to be doing a relevant degree, just have interest and enthusiasm. Examples include Deloitte’s Spring Insight Week in Technology and Barclays’ Spring Week, with some focusing on particular groups like RBS’s Insight Week’s for females. You can see more listed on Careerslink or on the organisations’ own websites. Let your day to day experiences work for you. Whether you are currently volunteering with a charity, running a society or working on an internship during your university life, you can make all of these experiences work for your digital skills too. What about offering to set up or upgrade a website for your employers or develop marketing content for them through social media? Whatever it is you are doing, look at how you are making an impact online â€" are you generating hits on their website, driving sales or changing behaviour? This is your opportunity to be a content creator. You could use search engine optimisation to maximise views on a site and data analytics to monitor your success rate. Being able to use and talk about your social media expertise will get you noticed. There is also the IDEA award enabling you to keep track of your expanding skillset. It’s a digital version of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme. Make content that makes an impact Whether it is blog posts, videos, or infographics â€" you have the technology at your fingertips. Good online content is no longer the exclusive domain of the IT specialist. With a smartphone or a laptop you have all you need to make content for yourself, if you are not already doing so. Have you heard of Medium? It’s a free blogging platform that helps anyone to create an accessible and easy to read blog post. If you have a YouTube account, you can edit your videos online. You can even hire cameras from the University’s Media Services team and use their full editing suite (with training available) to get the cut that you are looking for. Not sure where to start? For an overview of some of the key aspects of digital marketing and content creation, take a look at: “10 Digital Skills that can make students employable” What’s going on in the City? With digital skills being so in demand by firms across Greater Manchester, you will find a number of organisations keen to reach out to you to help bridge your skills gap or bust a few misconceptions about what is open to you. Drug Addiction 5 Ways To Change Your Life This Year At A Treatment Center

Drug Addiction 5 Ways To Change Your Life This Year At A Treatment Center It’s the first few weeks of 2017, which means everybody is talking about their New Year’s resolutions. Some intend to lose weight. Others want to make more money. More still want to find the love of their life. Whether you subscribe to the idea of resolutions or not, a new  year is always a good time to make changes. You may not necessarily think your drug problem is something to change. You may believe you can stop using whenever you want. However, if you were to actually go cold turkey, you’d quickly find that your body would ache for your next hit. By enrolling in a drug addiction treatment center, you can finally make the biggest change you could possibly hope for this year: you can get sober again. Not sure if you’re ready to take the next step? Here are five great reasons why you should. The sooner, the better! You can rediscover who you are â€" Who are you? Its a loaded question on its own, but its one that becomes infinitely more complicated once youre addicted to drugs. You may not know yourself as much other than a user and addict. Your looks start to change, your weight may shrink, and you leave behind your hobbies, ambitions, and social life. Drugs leave you a shell of your former self. Once you get sober, you can slowly relearn all the wonderful things that make you who you are. You can leave negative emotions behind â€" Chances are, you didn’t just try drugs one day out of the blue. Something or someone pushed you to do it. Maybe it was divorce, financial issues, loss, or trauma from your past. Whatever the reason, you masked the pain with drugs instead of dealing with it. With drug treatment, you and a therapist can discuss the cause of your substance use and you can learn to let go and move on past this horrible event that’s come to define you. You can patch up your confidence â€" Drug abuse often makes you feel antisocial, shameful, and afraid. Your self-esteem takes a nosedive. You’re embarrassed to face your friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers. You hide and spend a lot of time by yourself. You may feel like a failure and hate who you’ve become. Once you enroll in treatment, you can learn to forgive and love yourself again. You can reconnect with loved ones â€" Your relationships with others have probably suffered. Unless they were users themselves, you probably thought your friends and family just didn’t understand. You’ve stopped talking to  them and seeing them. After rehab, you can open dialogue and begin to repair the relationships you may have damaged when you were using. You’ll have time for you â€" Drug addiction takes up nearly all your time. You’re always trying to get money for your next fix. Then you’re seeking out drugs. Once you have drugs, you’re using them and may be incapacitated for a while. It’s a huge waste of time you could spend doing something much more fruitful. What have you always wanted to accomplish? Do you want to travel? Participate in a marathon? Take up painting? Whatever inspires you, this is your chance to go after it. Your life is now a clean slate. . Image credit.

Two Keys Unlock Future Success - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Two Keys Unlock Future Success - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career When our communication reflects that our intuitive thought and beliefs are in alignment, we come across as genuine and heartfelt. Underlying all of this are our values and priorities making them the two keys to unlock future success. Others need to see that we are looking out for everyone’s well-being including your own. Otherwise, a disconnect interrupts our progress. Balance is a necessity in all regards. It’s important to get the client’s perspective first to find a negotiated outcome. The same applies to collaborative partners and employers. But the moment we give in to every demand only to stray away from our beliefs and values, everything seemingly begins to fall apart. Throughout the years there is no doubt that you have been told, “you should…” The question is, how did you respond? In particular, when the idea did not suit you, did you agree to it anyway? Should you consider working with someone of this type, do your best to learn if they do the same with intended clientele. The question becomes, are you willing to associate yourself with people who use strong-arm tactics on their clients? The problem becomes should any of us give into something that is contrary to our beliefs; it won’t work. Moving forward on the wrong footing sends conflicting messages to our networks, and diminishes the stature of our individual personal brand. Deliver advice and ask questions for enhanced understanding in all aspects. Should something seem odd to you, ask more questions and dig deep to gain reasoning for suggestions made. Before you say yes, you want to be certain there is no ‘shady’ side with the arrangement. When you do turn down someone’s advice, provide your thought for doing so.  When we choose to learn from the experience, we fast track our success to increase the odds to our favor for the future. And if the other person becomes angry due to turning them down, then you know it wasn’t the right partner in the first place. Your  Decision The bigger question is whether you remain true to your beliefs and style in all regards. Consider the following: Do you feel as if sometimes you are a pushover for others? Are you receptive to at least considering new ideas from multiple angles? Are all of the decisions you make in alignment with your priorities and values? Sometimes a pronouncement by another may sound very convincing. But, something deep down tells us not to move forward. The next time this happens to you, consider the situation from all angles and discuss with trusted friends. It may be agonizing, but once you recognize the troubling areas, a better decision will be yours. As this becomes practice, you will find yourself becoming more confident when the need arises to make difficult decisions. The strength found in the practice of decision-making on your terms will serve to advance your career more quickly than previously thought possible. Following these guidelines will lead you to the Smooth Sale!

How did you lose your innocence - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

How did you lose your innocence - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog David Maister asks a great question: How did you lose your business innocence? I keep meeting people who have given up their ability to believe in the power of standards and ideals (or to believe that anyone else in business has them). An example: ?the firm pretends that it wants to inspire us, but the truth is that we do boring work, and so do those more senior than us. We cannot imagine that there are people who do work they are still excited about. That?s a luxury we cannot dream about. They just want us to work harder and get the people who report to us to work harder.??? So here?s my question to you: How did we / you end up here? Clearly, something was missing from my education and upbringing the world forgot to beat out of me my ideals, but seems to have done a good job of beating them out of most other people. Im really interested: What (specifically) happened to you that made you lose your innocence about how business (or academia) was run (stories please?) I agree with David there are a lot of people out there whose view of business include beliefs like: The ends justify the means its OK to cheat and lie in business If you want to get ahead in business, you need to be tough maybe even a jerk Business is only about money It doesnt matter how happy people are at work as long as they put in the hours I challenged some of those notions here and here. I think were seeing cynical businesses and cynical business people falling behind. Why? Theyre not creative. They cant innovate. They lose the talent wars and their best people to their more innocent competitors. And thats why the future of business belongs to the happy at work :o) Go read David excellent post, and tell him how your business innocence is doing. Thanks for visiting my blog.
